WHAT ARE WETLANDS?
- Wetlands are areas where water covers the soil, or is present either at or near the surface of the soil.
- Wetlands provide ecosystem services like filtering pollutants in water, controlling floods by absorbing excess water, supporting wildlife by offering food and shelter to many species and storing carbon to fight climate change.
- With 35% loss globally since 1970, wetlands are our most threatened ecosystem, disappearing three times faster than forests.
- To emphasize the importance of saving wetlands, drawing contest has been organized.
